My Story

In October 2004, I received a phone call at home from West Cumberland Hospital, explaining that the results of my x-ray were ready and asking me to come and meet the consultant’s nurse later that day. I said that I was happy for them to explain my results over the phone, but they insisted that I come to the hospital. I knew then that the news was not good.

I met the nurse, Vicky, and she told me the bad news. There was a growth in my right lung, measuring 3.5cm across. She continued to explain the procedures that I was now to go through in the coming weeks. My wife, Kate, and I went home in shock.

I had been a heavy smoker for much of my life so I knew I only had myself to blame. However, I have always been a fighter and a strong believer in fate. If God meant me to die, so be it, but for some reason, deep down, I just didn’t feel that it was my time.
